It is the season for repeats – and I got to catch Ricky Martin again yesterday on Oprah. How adorable is he? And he was talking my walk. I totally loved it. These days – I am totally into “coming out” stories – as I feel like a woman doing her own kind of “coming out” with the publication of my memoir Shameless.
The thing about “coming out” is (no matter what you are coming out about – whether it is sexual orientation, infertility or any disease – or simply sharing a piece of your private life story) – that when we find the courage to speak our truths -not hide who we are, what is going on for us in our lives, and what we believe in – we create a chain of change that can remove shame for so many other people that we couldn’t even begin to count them! This lights my fire – it always had.
I loved hearing Ricky talk about how he used egg donation, a gestational carrier and followed through with an attorney to build his family and make sure that they were safe.
I loved that he spoke about what being a father meant to him. And watching him loving and caring for his two sons was amazing. Everybody deserves to live their best life – and right now for Ricky that meant being the one to change his son’s diapers.
Even more – I loved hearing what his coming out did for other men. Ricky’s courage in speaking out as a public sex symbol to many woman that he preferred men was huge. It was also huge in the Latino culture. But his willingness to step into his fear and walk through it – has created an opening for other gay men to not only come out – but to show their families and friends that they are not alone. How amazing is that.
Ricky Martin, singer, hot sexy man, gay man – gay father – put a great big fat grin on my face. Oh yes – let’s all come out as who we are! No more closets! There is simply no room to dance in them!
