Working with the media has always been a very important part of patient advocacy. It’s important to make sure that the story of people who are struggling with infertility are told well. Often that means helping producers and writers understand the emotional and medical issues that people who are trying to conceive face, and debunking myths. And sometimes my work with the media centers around vetting experts and finding people who are willing to tell their story. Whether it is behind the scenes or in front of the camera - working with the media is a part of my job that is vital to creating change and getting information to the people who need it most. I was a telephone volunteer for RESOLVE NYC when I made my first appearance on the Joan Lunden Show with my son Tyler when he was just a year old. In so many ways - that chance invitation launched me onto the public stage. I told my story then publicly for the first time over 21 years ago - and I have not stopped. It is through telling my story that in many ways helped me grow one fertility patient organization and found another.
Now is your chance to be a fertility advocate. A national television show is looking for a couple who wants to have a baby. They want to talk to couples who are in the beginning stages of trying to conceive. They are looking for couples who are hoping to expand their families within the next year. And folks who are contemplating their first baby and have no idea of what to expect when it comes to conception. From their note to me:
“Have you been trying for more than 6 months and no luck? Are you starting to get anxious about getting pregnant? Do you want to know why you and your significant other are having a hard time expanding you family? A nat’l tv show is looking to help couple in the NY TRI-STATE area. If you’re interested, please email a photo and daytime contact number asap!”
So maybe this is an opportunity to get help. Maybe it’s an opportunity to help others simply by talking and sharing your experiences.

Maybe I will be seeing you soon on television. Telling your story and raising awareness.
